Over the last few weeks we have heard reports and watched footage of the war in the Ukraine.
Although this Country is far away from Australia, we cannot ignore the pain and suffering of the innocent people caught in the middle of this tragic war.
On the request from the Ukrainian Bishops, Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He will do it on Friday, 25th of March, during the Celebration of Penance in St. Peter’s Basilica. The same act, on the same day, will be carried out in Fatima by His Eminence Cardinal Krajewski, Apostolic Almoner, as envoy of the Holy Father.
Traditionally, each Friday during Lent, in many of our churches we reflect about the passion, crucifixion and the death of our Lord Jesus Christ by walking through the Stations of the Cross. This reflective prayer would be a wonderful opportunity for all of us to spiritually join this act of consecration and pray for those suffering because of that war.
I also encourage you to offer your personal prayers, fasting and almsgiving on the 25th of March for the same intention.
Personal prayers: when you offer your personal prayers that day, please remember all suffering because of this war.
Fasting: dedicate some form of fasting for that intention.
Almsgiving: donate some financial support to help people in Ukraine through Caritas Australia. https://www.caritas.org.au/donate/emergency-appeals/ukraine/
These Lenten observances will not only acknowledge that act of consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary but it will also allow us to participate in this consecration through our community and personal prayers.
Thank you for your commitment to God and to our neighbours.
