During these past few weeks of Advent, we are preparing to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ and His coming fills our hearts with true peace and joy. Yet our hearts are united in prayer and solidarity with all those affected by the recent tragic events in Sydney. We commend the victims, their families, and all who are grieving to the loving mercy of God, and we ask the Lord to bring comfort to those who are wounded in body, mind, and spirit.
Amid sorrow and uncertainty, we turn our hearts to the manger, where the Prince of Peace, born as human child, enters our world in humility and love. The birth of Christ reminds us that God is with us, even in our darkest moments. His peace is not fragile. It is a gift that surpasses our understanding, a peace that rises above hatred, violence, and fear, above all nations, cultures, and divisions.
This Christmas, may Christ’s peace dwell deeply in our hearts, strengthen our families, and renew our communities. May it inspire us to be instruments of reconciliation, compassion, and hope, bearing witness to the light that no darkness can overcome.
Advent is a time of waiting — an active waiting filled with joyful expectation. When we are asked what brings us the greatest joy at Christmas, the most common response is the coming together of family. So, cherish and enjoy this Christmas with your family and friends.
At the heart of our celebrations, however, is the true reason we gather: the birth of Jesus into the human family. As Christians and Catholics, we acknowledge and celebrate this great mystery at our Christmas Masses, giving thanks to Jesus for sanctifying our human life. After all, our Church is built as a family of families, and those who are separated from their own families should always find a warm welcome in our parishes.
As we begin the New Year, may the Lord bless our Diocese of Port Pirie with peace, courage, and renewed faith. Let us walk together as pilgrims of hope, acting as missionary disciples, trusting that the love of Christ will guide us to build our life truth, justice and peace.
