Five Ways of Support

While it may seem like the future of our diocese and parishes relies solely on our bishop, priests and deacons, the Catholic Church relies on lay people to help the churches thrive. Here are five ways to help our diocese and your local church.

Pray

Whether you are praying in church or at home, our clergy, religious and staff need your prayers. Praying unites all of us and brings us one step closer to God. Please pray for us as we pray for you.

Get Involved

Being involved in a parish can look differently for everyone. Call your parish office to see whether you can help. Attend Sunday Mass either in person or if you not able to be there at least attend virtually. Pope Benedict XVI said, “Taking part in the Sunday Eucharistic celebration will be the very thing that can keep your family truly united and centered.”

Invite Others

How did a small group of people make Christianity as big as it is today? By inviting others! Reach out to your friends, neighbours and family members to see if they’ll join you at Mass or other church events. Everyone likes to feel invited and welcomed; make sure to not keep the gift of Catholicism to yourself, but to spread the wealth. Be the person to show the love and hospitality of Christ to others.

Be Grateful

In our time, it’s important to have a grateful heart and be generous to others. You can do this by helping your local church thrive. Don’t forget to support priests and your parish staff. They are working behind the scenes to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. Let our priests and parish leaders know they are appreciated for all they do.

Donate

Without financial support, your local parish will not be able to pay its bills or support pastoral ministry. Please support your local church financially. An easy way to do this is by setting up a secure recurring donation.

Another way to donate is by giving to the Diocesan Appeals. The money that’s raised from this supports our clergy and their ministry as well as the different pastoral projects runs through the Diocese. We rely on outside donations to function.

Over the years, those who have felt a special connection with their local parish and church have left part of their Estate to their Parish or the Diocese. Like a gift to a charity, a bequest of any amount to the Church is a way of saying “thank you” for the spiritual nurturing provided to you and your family over the years.

The Diocese of Port Pirie receives money by way of direct donation, sale of goods, real estate or bequests in wills. The objectives of the Bequests Program include the promotion and resourcing of the work of the Catholic Church throughout the Diocese.

If you are considering making a bequest, consult with your solicitor who may wish to speak to the Diocesan Finance and Business Manager (08 8632 0552).

Bequest brochure

To maintain our pastoral ministry and in response to requests for support from other ecclesiastical or charitable organisations we call for donations through special collections.

Each year members of our Diocese support: Caritas, Mission, Seafarers, Youth Ministry, Clergy, overseas seminary formation. We respond also to many emergency appeals.

Clergy Support Fund

Our priests are supported through the first collection in our parishes and through the special appeals. Each priest who is not in receipt of a government pension receives minimal stipend.

In addition, our active priests ministering in Parishes receive a small allowance for food and household supplies and personal and professional expenses, health insurance cover and the financing of the motor vehicle expenses incurred.

If you are able and willing you can support our clergy by online donation to Clergy Support Fund.
