Let’s Pray

Lord Jesus Christ, Divine Saviour, You build your holy Church upon the foundation of love expressed by Simon Peter and you taught us how to love others as you have loved us. Be with us as we build our local Church in the Diocese of Port Pirie. May your presence strengthen our will to serve you and support one another. Come and stay with us in our homes. Let your presence in our families help us to refresh our “domestic church” with your gift of love. Open our ears to hear the voice of our neighbours crying out for your support.

Asking for your presence in our local communities, we ask your blessing upon our endeavours of supporting young people through our Diocesan Youth Ministry. May their efforts help young people courageously open their hearts to God’s gift of love, give them strength to face any challenges in their life, knowing that with God on their side they can achieve great things. For it is in you, O Lord, we place our hope and trust. AMEN

Immaculate Conception Church Quorn. The dedication of this church took place on the 22nd July 1883, when the new architect, NG Russel, accompanied by Rev B Nevin and Landy, performed the solemn ceremony in the presence of a large congregation. This being ended, the Holy Mass was celebrated by the Rev D Landy.

Sisters of St Joseph Convent in Quorn, now is the Presbytery. The crowning of a work began and happily finished by Father Cleary was that of building a convent for the Sisters of St Joseph…The opening of the convent took place on Sunday afternoon, 7th December 1890.

St Joseph’s School Hall now is the Parish Hall. On Sunday September 3 1922 a large number of people gathered to witness the laying of the Foundation Stone, the ceremony of which was performed by His Lordship, the Right Reverend Dr Norton. Also present were Rev Fr O’Bourke, Fr Clune and Fr Kelly, the Mayor of Quorn Mr R Thompson, the Mayor of Port Pirie Mr Firmin Jenkins, Messrs T Butterfield and W Harvey, MP’s all of whom occupied seats on the platform.

The Church was opened on Sunday August the 14th 1892 with a good crowd from as far away as Gordon, Craddock, Wilson and Hookina. There was a good array of clergy according to the ‘Southern Cross’: ‘it is not everyday that three priests and a bishop are to be found as far north as Hawker’. Besides Fathers Norton and Cleary, a visiting priest from Norwood namely Father J Peters, was present and preached the sermon at the opening of the Church.

CATHOLIC PRESBYTERY HAWKER

Sunday 29th January 1922 saw the foundation stone of the new presbytery laid… The Bishop of Port Augusta (now the Diocese of Port Pirie) laid the stone and delivered an appropriate address. The architect Mr JT Jenkins of Port Pirie and Mr Len Willcott of Willcott Bros contractors, also spoke a few words. The presbytery was eventually opened and blessed on Sunday July 10th 1922 by the Bishop of Pt Augusta, the Right Rev Dr Norton. Fr F Henschke came from Jamestown to take part in the ceremony. ‘There are seven rooms, with bathroom, pantry, cellar and verandah all around, and an underground water tank…it’s undoubtedly the best building of its kind in town…the work has been carried out in a most satisfactory manner, the rood, which is bungalow style, being particularly well done by Mr Mullens, the carpenter for entire work.

The Jesuits were the first missionaries who moved to Carrieton. St Raphael’s Catholic Church was erected in 1889. Also built was a large Presbytery.

When the representatives of the five co-operating Churches (Catholic, Anglican, Uniting, Lutheran and Churches of Christ) first met in April in 1977 at Port Pirie, a report was received of the proposed move of the Leigh Creek township. The implications of their move for the churches were faced, and the possibility of closer co-operation on a single church site was discussed … Discussion moved from suggestions about a number of chapels on a single site to the idea of a single building used by all the co-operating churches. This idea was met by an offer by ETSA to provide the building in lieu of compensation. Finally, a single building was agreed upon.
